The Aita Mari was an old tuna fishing boat modified for maritime rescue operations. During the NGO’s seventh mission, on January 24th 2022, they received an alert about a wooden boat adrift with 287 people on board, three of whom had died from hypothermia. Most of them were from Bangladesh and Egypt. Despite locating the ship, the Italian authorities prohibited the rescue and ordered the crew to monitor the vessel until the coast guard arrived. When they finally arrived, the victims were taken to Lampedusa without thermal blankets or life jackets, leading to the death of four more people. Later, on January 28, the NGO rescued 176 people from two drifting boats. One of them was Purity, a 19-month-old child travelling with her parents. Her odyssey began in Nigeria and passed through Niger and Libya. Finally, on January 30, they disembarked in Lampedusa, completing their journey to Europe.
